ARMAND YAPACHINO Armand says he started racing so long ago he can't remember. He said "I have been involved with racing since 1960. I built a boat and began racing as a driver. After racing for over forty years Armand has spent a lot of time on the water in classes that have changed with the boats saying "The 145 which is actually not a 145 anymore, it is now the 2.5 Litre. The class was the 145 at the time I was racing it, but now is referred to as the 2.5 Litre. I have also race the 2.5 and the 280 which is the 5 Litre class now." Armand is in there competing all the time. He will tell you the best strengths of a driver is the timing which is the most important, timing at the start of the race to win. But the best quality about Armand is he never gives up. When asked about racing boats at the high speeds achieved, Armand Said "I think that is part of the challenge that goes with boat racing. The challenge is to go as fast as you can, and to be there first." Armand's top speed raced was 115 m.p.h. in a 280 class. In the past Armand has prospected for uranium, and has done a little sail boat racing, but hydros consume all of his time now. Armand built his hydro, and he built the engine. he added "I did it all and do it all, I do the maintenance of it and keep things running." Armand does not bend the rules to the extreme to win, but he will push it to the limit, right to the edge. To win as a driver Armand will tell you "It takes timing and concentration as to where you're at and what you are doing. It really takes full time concentration to race." When he started racing hydros didn't have capsules like they do today and Armand went over ten to fifteen times during his racing career. Radio communication has become a big asset to the crew and the driver during a race For years without radios drivers and crew had to rely on good equipment and the driver and his skills once he left the pits. Armand added "Radio communication has helped immensely, especially with the capsule where your view is more restricted in the cockpit." "I have been racing for years, and with those years I have enjoyed my achievements" Armand said when asked if he had any goals. For T.I.R.A. Armand has been President or Commodore two or three times, and on the board itself numerous times. He also holds a special recognition as the last of the Charter members of Tacoma Inboard Racing Association.
