TRAVIS JOHNSTON Travis got started in hydro racing with his Dad, Wally Johnston who started racing in 1980. Travis started racing J Stocks, the smallest class of outboards when he was eight years old, and raced for four years. When it comes to crewing for their boat Travis says "I was with the crew members when I was about two years old, so you can call it a crew member. It was with my Dad, originally it was the Mariner, it was E-106." He has been going to hydro races with my Dad for over twenty-five years now. With years of experience as a crew member for his Dad, sitting in the drivers seat was a natural course for Travis to take in the 5 Litre running with a Chevy 305. Travis takes racing serious but likes to have a good time, and have fun. Coming from Helena Montana Travis and his Dad spend a lot of time on the road going to races on the west and east coast. But when Travis has time he likes to scuba dive, play basketball, softball, hunt, fish, and golf, and work on the boat. When asked if its crazy to race boats at the speeds achieved, Travis said, "I would tell them to get in the boat one time and see what they think then." But speed isn't everything. To become a driver Travis adds "You need concentration, I would say, Pay attention more or less. Be alert and aggressive." Travis goal is the Hall of Champions racing the 5 Litre. He would like to race an unlimited hydroplane someday, but 5 Litres are what he prefers to race.
